Well, I think I've got enough .hack background now that I can make a decent attempt at a character. One question though...Is there any difference between first and second characters? If there is, I'd rather have this one as my second. I just want to fine tune my other one more and this one was easier to do. If the order of characters does matter, I'll change the title to reflect that.
[li]Picture Reference: <optional>
[/li][li]Character Name:: Pluton
[/li][li]Class: Steam Gunner
[/li][li]Characters apparent Age: 21
[/li][li]Characters Gender: Male
[/li][li]Characters Hair Color: Orange
[/li][li]Characters Eye Color: Crimson
[/li][li]Character Height: 5’8”
[/li][li]character Weight: 145 lbs
[/li][li]character Clothing Style: Pluton’s garb is mostly natural colors, mixes of green and brown mostly. Most of the outfit is fairly snug to avoid getting in the way in combat, particularly in the arms. He wears thin black gloves, the left one having a surprisingly thick band of metal encircling the wrist. His actual attire is worn as a sort of quasi-uniform. The shirt and the pants are separate but tucked in so no skin is exposed (aside from his head, his entire body is covered). The colors superficially resemble army camo, but it's obvious that it's only for show, not to actually sneak around (this being consistent with Pluton's preferred sneaking strategy: don't be there when they look). Her has dog-tags hanging about his neck, although written on them is just a string of 1s and 0s. The shirt is long sleeved and tighter than the rest of his outfit, while the pants have a certain degree of looseness. His preferred footwear is a pair of extremely comfortable black boots. All his clothing is neither formal nor casual or even somewhere in between really. It's all simply meant to be functional and durable and the strange style reflects this clearly.
[/li][li]Character Physical Traits: Lanky and never seeming to stand straight (leaning ever so slightly to the side when standing), Pluton doesn’t seem like the kind of person you could take seriously. He looks lazy at first glance, but his loud, friendly voice usually dispels the illusion the moment he opens his mouth. He has an obvious nervous energy about him and doesn’t like to sit still, fidgeting until being able to move again. He wears his hair a longer than he does in real life, but it doesn’t reach below the chin.
[/li][li]Character Personality: Pluton is a driven, passionate person. He hates sitting around doing nothing and would rather grind than just sit and talk (now, talking while doing something else, no problem. He’s good at multitasking, so there’s no problem there). He’s upbeat, takes problems as they come with good humor, has a natural charisma that people are frequently attracted to, and he lives life (digital or otherwise) to the fullest whenever he can.
Pluton is a PKer, and makes no secret of it. Human players are almost universally superior targets than NPCs, as living people can adapt and respond in new and creative ways where a program is highly limited, no matter how well coded. He does not, however, do it out of malice. He just wants a decent challenge. As such, he never goes after players of lower levels than him, in particular new characters. He doesn’t try to force his views on PKing on anyone (and he’s perfectly willing to PKK if the target in question seems interesting), and if someone shows that they really, really don’t want to fight him, he’ll probably back off. He does it for fun, not to be a bully. He also occasionally stops when it becomes a clear victory, thus avoiding the opponents experience loss, but this is not always the case.
[/li][li]Fighting Style: As his class would indicate, Pluton is a ranged fighter. To him, the farther away, the better. This isn’t an act of cowardice so much as sound tactics and a personal challenge (it’s harder to shoot something the further away you are after all). The most basic axiom of combat to Pluton is “if you have to shoot someone twice, you’ve obviously screwed up somewhere”. Perfect shots and defeat are ideal, if impractical. His tactics are fairly simple: stay out of enemy range and take single, precise shots to deal maximum damage. He moves around quite a bit unless he’s found an ideal camping spot (the negative connotation of this is stupid in his opinion. Finding a strong defensible position and staying there to fortify just makes sense). He is particularly aware of his surroundings in combat and takes advantage of anything unusual to help improve his chances of victory. If this goes too well however, he will likely change things to give his target at least a sporting chance. If forced into melee, Pluton will grudgingly start using point blank shots until he can get his opponent(s) away enough so he can make a fighting draw back (retreat would imply leaving the battle, which he doesn’t usually do). When faced with a target who’s obviously going to win, he pulls out all the stops and goes down laughing if that doesn’t work. He actually prefers the loss of xp to the thought of using a smoke screen (which spoils any fight good enough to take him down in the first place). Pluton is not a quiet opponent and frequently keeps up conversations (bantering with an opponent keeps the mood decent). His usual targets are small, critical parts. Head, heart, hands, feet…all the places that take a target out of combat (either by actually killing them or making them unable to fight). If the target is heavily armored, he sticks with piercing shots (once he learns the arts anyway).
While by no means opposed to solo missions, Pluton prefers to work in teams. He makes an excellent leader and takes into account the strengths and weaknesses of any given group he’s in to help make things work out as well as possible. His party tactics usually involve working from behind, supporting his allies when no-one is in particularly bad shape and changing priority targets in a heartbeat. His targets on individuals (head, hands and such) don’t change much here. He puts emphasis on who needs to be protected based on a variety of factors, but he isn’t going to protect someone less than himself if he really needs to get out of there and they don’t. Altruism’s fine, but there are sensible limits.
[/li][li]Strengths: Predictably, Pluton’s accuracy is very high, letting him hit targets that most people can barely see. He’s also very light on his feet and can move quiet a bit more quickly than normal. Finally, his ranged attacks have more a punch to them than most, resuting in substantially increased damage.
Short and Sweet: Accuracy at range, ranged damage and speed.
[/li][li]Weaknesses: Like all steam gunners, Pluton is less than suitable in melee. Not only does his weapon stink accuracy wise when not given room (which gets worse when his weapon’s power is used), his body is quite a bit weaker than average and takes substantially more damage when struck. Further, his physical strength is low, so trying to use his gun in melee to avoid accuracy problems will produce pitifully weak attacks.
Short and Sweet: Low Accuracy up close, virtually no melee damage, low defense.

[/li][li]Arts:
Toge Totsu Sandan - Thorn Shot (Target: Area, Normal, 0 posts)
Kaminari Hikari Sen Dan - Thunder Spark (Target: Unit, Piercing, 100 posts)
Hatsu Tama Dan - Plectra Bullet (Target: Area, Aerial, 200 posts)
Photon Stream (Target: Line, Piercing, 200 posts. Custom): Charging his weapon for a few moments, Pluton fires a sustained beam instead of a single shot. The beam can be held for a few seconds, good enough for a sweep of an area. The attack has a bit less impact than his usual single shots, but pierces armor to compensate.
[/li][li]Spells: N/A
.Weapon Information|:.
[/li][li]Weapon Name: Solar Flare
[/li][li]Weapon Type: Bayonet
[/li][li]Weapon Appearance: While most weapons are stored in non-space when not in use and drawn from no-where, Pluton’s preferred weapon is always out in the open. It’s just that no-one knows it. Built into his left arm, the weapon appears with a mechanical unfolding that converts the majority of Pluton’s arm (from the hand to the half-way point of the shoulder and elbow) into a sniper riffle (if you’re thinking of Ovan’s cannon, that’s much larger than this one). The riffle is highly ornate, polished golden in color and decorated with flowing iconography of starbursts. The weapon doesn’t fire bullets or rounds in the standard sense but instead utilizies thin bursts of ultra-concentrated light (that is, lasers). The damage, speed and such is exactly in line with normal shots for Steam Guns, it just looks cooler. Well, it actually might be a bit worse, since it's easier to see where they're coming from.
[/li][li]Weapon Abilities:
1. Seek and Destroy:
This ability grants Pluton massively augmented visual prowess, letting him see targets clearly that he can barely notice at all without this mode. The vision is so potent that it can actually pierce objects in the way with a sort of X-Ray effect. If the target is closer than 30 feet, using this power to try and lock on is an extremely disorienting experience and is effectively useless. Shots fired from this ability light up Pluton’s position on the mini-map, no matter where he is on the map, but only to those he intentionally fires at. Seek and Destroy can be turned on and off at will.
.Character Background Information|:.
[/li][li]Friends: Pluton’s natural charisma and easy-going nature make him easy to get along with and he makes new friends almost effortlessly (even with his unusual playing style). He is the current head of the guild called Scope, who share his opinions on seeking interesting challenges without being too serious or harsh about it (many of the members of Scope are Steam Gunners as well, but at least one member of each class can be found in their ranks).
[/li][li]Enemies: Due to his tendency to PK for the sake of a challenge, Pluton makes plenty of enemies (although he usually tries to tell them it’s all in good fun and not to take it the wrong way, and help compensate in many cases).
[/li][li]History: Pluton’s time in the game has been short but very eventful for the time, all things considered. He spent hours wandering Mac Anu not just to get an idea of where everything was (that didn’t take long), but to see who went where, what the important spots were, what places to avoid at early levels and just generally getting to know people. He worked with several friendly players to get a firm feel for the game’s actual areas and he swiftly began mixing solo and party gaming to give himself the most broad experience possible.
It didn’t take long for Pluton to begin to develop a bit of a concern. The monsters just weren’t interesting enough to take down as a single person. Working with people in a party was different, and with people around he could coordinate and perform interesting moments of strategy. On his own though, even though the monsters were harder, they couldn’t work beyond their own rule systems. They were too bound. It was then that Pluton started going to the arena to try fighting humans. It quickly became apparent that humans were infinitely more interesting in a fight and Pluton started wanting to fight them solo. At the same time, he was disgusted with the idiots who PKed those who couldn’t fight back. Instead, he started asking those who visited the arena (specifically those with slightly higher levels than him) if they would agree to varying games against him (often sort of a lethal hide and seek). Not everyone agreed of course, but those that did and won found that not only was he very good about it (and played by any rules they set before the game started) but actually handed out items for beating him. He gained a reputation for this and people eventually started seeking him out for a round or two, and he now has a decent stream of these at any time he feels like (which is to say, a lot). He still sometimes went after those who hadn’t agreed (not those who turned down a request though), but these were almost universally spared a final blow that would take them down to zero (the only ones he finished were those he considered deserving, usually other PKers, and those who agreed to those terms at the beginning). To the people he didn’t ask but just went after, he frequently handed out a few healing serums afterwards, laughed about it and left, leaving some players very angry and most very confused.
Eventually, to help facilitate his style of play and help similar people in the same way, he founded the guild called Scope to gather others together. The guild started small and took a while to grow but now it has twenty active members. The guild works on a military hierarchy, half because it’s a nice system that Pluton was familiar with, and half because he thought the title of Admiral sounded a lot cooler than Guild Master (he refuses to go by Guild Master once he’s explained Scope’s system). Pluton splits his time between wandering alone looking for tough targets and traveling with party members (when they’re Scope members, usually in bigger versions of the hide and go seek games, and regular maps when the party is just normal players).

[/li][li]Picture Reference: <optional>
[/li][li]Player Name: Jason Sinclair
[/li][li]Occupation: Naval Officer (Current Rank: Lieutenant)
[/li][li]Age: 25
[/li][li]Gender: Male
[/li][li]Hair Color: Blonde
[/li][li]Eye Color: Blue
[/li][li]Height: 6’0”
[/li][li]Weight: 156 lbs
[/li][li]Clothing Style: On duty, his uniform (beige shirt, black pants, a few medals and associated paraphernalia). Off duty, he still prefers a less casual dress, having grown comfortable with slightly formal outfits. You won’t catch him in a t-shirt, but a dress-shirt with the color undone is fairly common. He hates hats and thus never wears them unless ordered to do so (this happened a LOT during his original training), and then reluctantly.
[/li][li]Physical Traits: Jason is surprisingly thin for his height, but he’s well muscled regardless. He keeps his hair cut short and can’t stand the fact that it grows back very quickly (“what, is it trying to escape or something?”). He has poor vision without glasses (he goes for contacts) and keeps his face clean shaven.
[/li][li]Personality: The only real difference between Jason and Pluton is looks. He doesn’t use {The World} as a means of masking who he really is; he acts just the same as he would in real life. He’s very good at working with people and bringing out the best in those he has to work with (even those who can’t stand his seemingly boundless energy eventually come around), one of the primary reasons for his current rank today. Jason loves his job and, while he feels only small amounts of patriotism for his country, he’s extremely protective of his ship (the battle cruiser class vessel, USS Typhoon). He likes working outdoors, swimming, and the ocean in general, and he knew pretty early on in life that he wanted to join the Navy.
While skeptical when he first heard about {The World}, he was eventually pressed into buying it on one of the long breaks while the Typhoon was in drydock for repairs. He found himself pleasantly surprised and, later, very interested in spending time on the game. His entire adult life has been highly disciplined, so he knows when to call it quits for a day and do other things, so addiction hasn’t been a problem. Still, he finds it’s the only really entertaining thing to do for more than an hour or two.
One might be think that such a light-hearted person would work well in an organization like the Navy. It should be noted that while he does act like this around people of equal or lesser rank, he has a surprisingly high amount of self control around superiors (in game, the only people he considers superiors are admins, who he gives great respect) and will keep himself calm (if slightly fidgety) as long as they’re around.
.Biographical Information|:.
[/li][li]Parents: Joshua Sinclair and Mary Dontan
[/li][li]Siblings: Jason is an only child.
[/li][li]Relatives: Jason’s relatives are few but they mostly live close and he sees them quite a bit.
[/li][li]History: Jason was born in California. From the age of 4, he spent tones of time at the beach, swimming. He didn’t build sandcastles or pick up shells, he just spent as much time in the water as he could (his parents, both much more passive people, had a hard time keeping up with him). When he was old enough, he joined a boating club nearby to see if it was as fun as swimming. At first, he didn’t like being so close to the water without being in it, but after a few months, he started to love it as much he did regular swimming. It was about then, at age 11, that he decided he’d probably want to make a career out of boatcraft. Fishing didn’t suit him, since it involved a great deal of sitting and waiting, something he couldn’t stand.
When he was old enough to enlist, he did so almost immediately. His time in training was, admittedly, a bit more grueling than he’d expected, but he never seemed to run out of steam at least. His first assignment was a frigate called the USS Shield, and while it wasn’t a bad commission, it didn’t last particularly long. The vessel was decommissioned only two months after Jason was first assigned to it. This was not a planned decommissioning. A catastrophic engine failure very nearly sunk the entire ship. On the plus side however, Jason’s efforts in trying to save the Shield were essential in getting them back to port without doing an impromptu rendition of the Titanic (sinking was one thing, but Jason absolutely REFUSED to sing “My Heart Will Go On”).
His next commission lasted much longer and is his current assignment on the Typhoon. Last year he was promoted to Lieutenant under Captain James T. Birk (who has long ago consigned anyone who made a pun about his name to the brig for a few hours). Birk was a bit gruff, but he wasn’t a bad person and Jason’s natural charisma eventually made the man capable of speaking more than monosyalbic expressions and short orders when he was around (it helped a bit that Jason hadn’t make a pun about the name either, but that was as much because he’d never watched Star Trek than out of respect). That’s not to say Birk was or is friendly or anything, but he’s a bit more open to his right hand man.
Jason doesn’t have a whole lot of ambition. He sees what his Captain has to go through on a day to day basis and decided shortly after taking his new rank that he was going to try and stay there for a good long while. This was reinforced when the Typhoon recently had to go in for a major upgrade, as Jason saw just how much annoyance Birk had to deal with during it. It was during this period of leave that Jason became playing {The World}.
.Role Playing Information|:.
[/li][li]Sample RP
Delta Flying Colorful Wave was normally a pretty fun area to play for someone at Pluton’s level. The large, grassy field region was a simple linear layout with the warp gate at one end and the Beast Temple at the other. The monsters tended to be scattered about but there was a higher amount than usual and they were reasonably tough. Pluton liked to camp out at the entrance of the temple, purposefully waiting for other players to arrive. After he got a look at them using Seek and Destroy, he’d judge whether it would be fair to go after them. Today, the pickings were a bit low. The popular area did indeed draw people here, but the most recent group was out of their depth. If Pluton had to guess, he would have said they were at least 4 levels too low for the area. He applauded the courage silently, but since the whole lot of them were melee types, they didn’t stand very much chance against the more balanced array of enemies that faced them. Then something interesting happened. A new group found its way into the area, one of a much higher level than needed if their equipment was any indication. They didn’t seem casual however, and there was little point coming here if they were that much stronger. Unless…
Paying closer attention at the newcomers from his perch on a hill, Pluton quickly confirmed their intent: PKing. His eyes narrowed. Not only were they obviously far too strong for the younger players to stand a ghost of a chance, they had the look of someone who was following. The reactions of the younger group confirmed it. They were very likely stalker PKs, something that made things even worse. PKing wasn’t bad if done properly, but hunting someone down and making them live in fear of being attacked…that was pretty low. Deciding to help out a bit (particularly since the PKers looked stronger than Pluton himself), he raised his weapon and took careful aim.
The party leader of the younger group was trying to keep his friends together, hoping they’d be able to get of this in one piece. He knew that fighting directly would have them on the ground in a heartbeat, but he knew these guys. They’d been hunting him and his friends for half the week now, citing some petty vengeance thing. It was obvious they just liked to pick on them because they were weaker. Negotiation wasn’t going to work, but since they were after him instead of his friends, he might be able to make them mad enough to ignore the others. Then they could make a break for the gate nearby. Summoning up what courage he could muster, he put on his most arrogant face and started his attempt.
Well, what took you so long? Get slowed down fighting noobs on the way in or did you just forget how to follow a straight line once you got here…That got a response all right. All three of the PKers were hotheads (not an uncommon trait among them), and they had their weapons out in an instant.
Not smart dweeb. And here we were, thinking about taking it a bit easy on you. Might have even let you do whatever after we finished you this one time. But now you’ve gone and done it. I’m going to kill you here, when you come back, and every other time you come back until you never log in again! How does that sound? The leader smirked, ready to charge in and make good on his promise if his target so much as twitched the wrong way.
Are you really that pathetic? You’d actually devote all that time and energy, ruining your life basically, because you can’t take a taunt? Or were you dumb enough that you didn’t realize what was going on? The PK leader opened his mouth but no sound came out. Where there was moments ago only open air, there was now the visual residue of a very bright beam of blue light. Burned into their eyes for a moment, everyone gathered watched with some awe as the PKer dropped his broadsword and fell to the ground. No-one moved at that spot, but on his far off hill, Pluton smiled from behind his scope.
Boom, headshot…
