.hack//mutation was actually my first introduction to the .hack universe. I borrowed it from a friend without playing the first game.
I was just thinking about the game though. I remember loving how much it felt like I was really playing an online game. I even felt like it was a big hassle to log off and check e-mails, even though it would only take about 2 seconds and it was all one game anyway...
I think that the .hack/GU series managed to capture the feeling of an online game, but I think there was just one thing that they missed this time around...
I remember while I played .hack//mutation, there was this sort of sadness present in most of the cut scenes, and even just during gameplay.
I just didn't really see that in the GU series. That sadness was usually just replaced with anger. Not to say that it didn't have sad moments, it definitely did, I just didn't feel any pull on the heartstrings when I was doing something as simple as walking around town.
Does anyone else feel this way, or is it just me? ^^;;

I have nothing to compare it to, myself so I don't really...
Though there is a lot of frustration in .hack//GU - like "goddamnit, Haseo, why are you such a jerk!"

on topic: The GU series definitely has a lot more anger than sadness, sometimes I miss those moments from the first 4 games. But I suppose that its just a different reaction to a similar event. Instead of becoming sad at the pain his friends feel, Haseo gets angry, he is a very angry individual. I think I liked the mood of .hack//SIGN (the first anime) the best. I also liked how in the first four games whenever you were in a dungeon, even if it was just for grinding and had storyline purpose at all, the areas themselves felt sad...If that's possible.

I know what you mean Solieus, there were more than a few scenes that I desperately wanted to step in game, slug him and step out again. On the plus side, I like characters that I hate (makes lots of sense...) because if I'm getting upset at them, that means I'm more into the game than I otherwise might be.
Now, I haven't even finished the first of the GU series, so my entire knowledge of .hack is maybe half a game (well, maybe a bit more than half. I just met Kite basically) and a few episodes of .hack//Sign, but I definitely felt the huge difference in character reaction. I don't know which I liked more, but I'd lean toward Sign. I love the atmosphere it presented, even if I didn't know half of what was going on.
Still, Haseo has his moments that I'm glad to see. Once or twice he shows bits of actual decency (and the store scene....that was just awesome).

i never played any of the games, except for a bit of .hack//infection, when i borrowed it from a friend... but she wanted it back before i got too far. and now i don't have my ps3, so can't play them. i might eventually get a ps2 just to play the games... but not for a while... maybe when i move out and get my own apartment... (dunno... i never really cared for mum watching me play video games... it was just weird since she'd commentate and be a peanut gallery...)

My mom did the same thing kinda, only it was alot more annoying since she had to know everything that was going on in the game despite having watched me play from the start menu.
I just picked up my own little black tv, twenty bucks and worth it, and a ps2, substantially more expensive but still worth it, and played in my room. then I moved out and play vid-games in the living room with a huge big screen tv courtesy of room mates! Huzzah!
Anyway, now I have an urge to play the first four games. Thanks guys, way to waste my time... Infection was the first one right?
By the way, any body ever wonder: If the high up corporate types could make any avatar they wanted to interact in The World, why did they choose to be fat and ugly? (Refrencing the first four games here)

Hey, at least they made an appearance. In G.U it was a bunch of volunteers doing admin duty, and that was about the most CC Corp did. Other than decide (Spoiler!) That an AIDA infected person would make a -great- leader for the group. (End of spoiler)
